The project will investigate and will also start a photo-
identification catalogue for dolphins in Jamaica.
Funding was obtained from the Research Development
Fund at UTech, Jamaica, the Society for Marine

Integrated Optics and Photonics Laboratory
(Mr
Maurice McGlashan-Powell–Principal Investigator)
The Integrated Optics and Photonics Laboratory was
established in June 2010 at the main faculty buildings
at 235 Old Hope Road. This laboratory is aimed at
strengthening the research and teaching capabilities
at the university in integrated optics, photonics and
experimental physics. However, the building out of the
lab remains a work in progress.
Mr McGlashan-Powell produced three patents during
the review period.

Natural Products Research Laboratory
(Dr Andrew
Lamm – Principal Investigator)
The Natural Products Laboratory was established
in the School of Natural and Applied Sciences with
funding obtained from the UNDP Global Environment
Facility-Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP) and
the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica between
July 2010 and March 2012. The lab supports
undergraduate student research projects from FOSS,
COHS and FENC as well as several faculty research
projects. The recent expansion of the NPRL which was
led by Dr Andrew Lamm, has seen the lab space triple
in size. Dr Lamm and the NPRL are a crucial part of
the Cannabis Collaboration Group at UTech, Jamaica,
charged with managing all aspects of the University’s
marijuana research licenses, its internal and external
collaborations along with revenue generation and
outreach.
INVOCAB Project
(Dr Andrew Lamm, Senior Expert)
The European Union (EU) African, Caribbean, Pacific
Science and Technology (ACP SandT II) funded project,
titled “INVOCAB - Improving Innovation Capacities
in the Caribbean” is a collaboration between the
Scientific Research Council (SRC); National Institute of
Higher Education, Science and Technology (NIHERST);
Mico University College; Ministry of Education and
UTech, Jamaica. This project was created to improve
innovation in selected schools in the Caribbean through
a targeted 16 primary and secondary schools, eight (8)
each in Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica.
Public Lecture
The Environmental Sciences Division presented a panel
discussion on October 16, 2014 titled “Family Farming:
Feeding the world, caring for the earth” which featured
Dr Jerome Thomas from the UN Food and Agriculture
Organization, Ms Nicola Shirley Phillips from the Source
Farm Foundation and Messrs Ceretsie Campbell and
Raymond Martin from UTech, Jamaica.
4th Annual Sports Conference
The 4th Annual Caribbean Conference on Sport
Science was held on Friday April 11, 2014 at the
Jamaica Pegasus Hotel under the theme under
“Promoting Sustainable Development in Sport through
Science and Research”. The keynote speaker for the
conference was Dr Richard Godfrey, Sport Scientist
of Brunel University in London, who has conducted
extensive research in the field of human performance
and coaching education.
Scientific Conference
The Faculty’s 3rd International Scientific Conference
