students also visited the Instituto de Arquitectura
Tropical of Costa Rican Arch Bruno Stagno. The
Caribbean School of Architecture collaborated with
four entities, the School of Architecture --Escuela de
Arquitectura, Universidad de Costa Rica; Ministerio de
Cultural y Juventud; La Comisión Nacional de Patrimoni
Historico de Costa Rica; and Costa Rica ICOMOS.
AS4 Local Study Tour 2015
Annotto Bay, St Mary in Jamaica between February 1st
and 15th 2015
Eleven students from Year 4 of the Undergraduate
Programme participated in the Jamaica AS4 Study Tour
component in the town of Annotto Bay, St Mary between
February 1st and 15th 2015. This enhanced pre-requisite
teaching and learning methods for observing a city and
drawing these observations in ways that communicate
the spatiality of urban form. The broad aims were to
identify the urban elements of a rural town, document
the unique

and reflect
o n
t he
development
needs of the
town given
its physical
a t t r i bu t es .

of Architecture worked with the wider Community of
Annotto Bay especially the Annotto Bay Community
Development and Environment Association in
collaboration with the St Mary Parish Council, also
the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency
Management (ODPEM).
MAI Study Tour 2015:
Old Havana and its Fortification System, Cuba, April
10th - 24th 2015
Three graduate students in the first year of the Masters
Programme visited the World heritage site of Old
Havana and its Fortification System in Cuba from April
10th to 24th 2015 to study the city with reference to
climate, assemblage and varying contexts to include
historical, social, economic, political and cultural, while
attempting to unravel the interactions between the
city and how its inhabitants live, work and play. Studio
Tutors, Arch Cheryl Pouchet and Arch Christoper
Wymm-Stone, accompanied them at varying times.
For this, the CSA collaborated with three institutions,
Colegio Universitario de San Gerónimo, Habana Vieja;
Office of the City Historian of Havana; and Cuba
ICOMOS.
School of Building and Land Management
MSc Built Environment
The MSc. BE candidates went on a four-island (Antigua,
Montserrat, Dominica, Barbados) tour during the period
May 4 – 17, 2014. The tour of Barbados culminated
with a presentation by students and lecturer, Jacqueline
Douglas-Brown at the Caribbean Urban Forum (CUF).
Presentation Topic - Towards Safe Placemaking:
Demonstrating the Use of Urban Design Elements to
Enhance Safety in a University Town, Papine, Jamaica.
Surveying Equipment Donation
The student-led Land Surveying Club, UTech, Jamaica
made a generous donation of three automatic levels
and three levelling staves to the Faculty of the Built
Environment, UTech, Jamaica. This valuable gift was
the brain-child of the faculty representative for the club,
Mr Alvin Clarke, who himself donated a total station
and an automatic level. The new instruments represent
a significant addition to the under-resourced Surveying
Equipment Store.
Continuing Education Courses
The LEVS division continues to offer the professional
Real Estate Salesman 100 hours/4 weeks (full time)
course. A number of other short professional courses
were also delivered
