to the University ranging from ten years to forty
years. Special awards were given to staff who had
distinguished themselves in the areas of Research,
Teaching, and in the Administrative, Ancillary and
Technical categories. The President’s Award for
Instructional Excellence was presented to Mr Michael-
Anthony Dobson-Lewis, Senior Lecturer in the Faculty
of Education and Liberal Studies, and the award for
Excellence in Research was presented to Dr Sean
Thorpe, Senior Lecturer in the School of Computing
and Information Technology.
Forty Years: Mrs. Paula McBean, Administrative Support, College of
Business and Management is all smiles as she accepts her award for
40 years to service from Dr. Paul Golding, Dean, College of Business and
Management.
Policies
The Code of Ethical Conduct and Whistling-blowing
Procedure was approved.
Industrial Relations
The post of Industrial Relations Manager was approved
by the Ministry of Finance and filled on July 1, 2014.
Throughout the review period the industrial relations
climate at the university remained tense, characterized
by episodes of protest actions by staff represented by
the three unions as they coalesced around issues of
mutual concern.
This period also saw the commencement of discussion
with the Ministry of Finance and Planning related
to negotiations with the University of Technology
Academic Staff Union. Discussions commenced at
the MOFP on March 6, 2015 and continued at the local
level on March 23, 2015.
Medical Centre
The Medical Centre continues to provide health care to
the University Community. A total of fifteen thousand
two hundred and forty six (15,246) patients received
health care for the period under review at a monthly
average of one thousand three hundred and seventy.
This is an increase of one thousand one hundred (1,100)
patients when compared to the 2013/14 period.
Environmental Health
During the 2014/2015 reporting period, five (5) critical
environmental parameters were consistently monitored
on all campuses of the university. These include but
were not necessarily limited to: Food safety and drinking
water quality; pest infestation management; solid
waste monitoring and management; environmental
awareness and sensitization; swimming pool health and
sanitation. Of the five environmental health parameters,
food safety and water quality achieved and maintained
high compliance.
Customer Service Advocate
The Office of the Customer Service Advocate initiated
Customer Service training sessions for staff from the
Western Campus and the Library and for new members
of staff . The Office also met with staff and students to
continue consultations on the draft University Customer
Service Charter. With assistance from the Office of
Distance Learning the Customer Service Advocate
began work in February 2015 on an Online Customer
Service Training Programme which would make training
accessible on demand and at distance.
The President’s Award for Excellence in Customer
Service was presented as part of the 44th Annual
Staff Awards Function held in May 2014 The awardee
was Mrs. Heather White, the Medical Centre’s Health
Services Administrator.
