possible by funding from USAID through the UTech,
Jamaica Cares Project.
Literary Festival and Cultural Showcase 2015
In collaboration with the Calvin McKain Library the
Centre hosted its annual Literary Festival and Cultural
Showcase in tribute to Jamaica’s Theatre Arts Industry,
This year’s Literary Festival and Cultural Showcase, its
7th staging, was designed to focus attention on theatre
as a vital feature of Jamaica’s cultural heritage and a
crucial sub-sector in the creative industries.
The day’s activities began with a presentation
on the theme, “Safeguarding theatre in Jamaica:
contemplating assets for urgent preservation and
development” and after a full afternoon of discussion,
the programme culminated with “The Theatre
Experience” and the presentation of the President’s
Award for Arts and Culture Industry at the Cultural
Showcase. The production highlighted significant
moments in the evolution of indigenous Jamaican
theatre and its influence on screens and in studios.
As is customary, students enrolled in Centre’s Arts
and Culture programme took centre stage as the main
cast for the Cultural Showcase; elective students
are assessed as part of their final evaluation for the
semester, accruing credits towards their respective
degree programmes.
