School of Graduate Studies and Research (SGSRE)
SGSRE focused its community service initiatives
on education and skills transfer and development.
The Caribbean Sustainable Energy and Innovation
Institute CSEII works closely with the Faculty of Built
Environment (FOBE) by facilitating internships during
which students are challenged with real assignments
that contribute to the development of the institution
while fostering their holistic professional growth.
College of Health Sciences (COHS)
The Cynthia Shako Early Childhood Education and Day
Care Centre
Both the Cynthia Shako Day Care Centre for Children
and the UTech, Jamaica, Jamaica Rehabilitation Centre
for Children with Disabilities continued to provide
service to both the UTech, Jamaica Community and
the Mustard Seed Communities. Children of the
Mustard Communities, housed at Sophie’s Place were
welcomed to the rehabilitation centre where they
benefited from stimulation sessions as well as a variety
of learning experiences.
Through the aid of the Caribbean Poison Information
Network (CARPIN), the College was involved in several
initiatives to extend the reach of its public education
mission. These included:
• Training of certified pest control operators in Poison
Management
• Training of Facility Management Staff on Toxins of
Cleaning agents
• A Poison Prevention Seminar in St Thomas with
collaborating agencies National Environmental
Protection Agency ( NEPA}, PCA, and the Ministry of
Health.
• International Lead Poisoning Week Seminar and
community outreach
• Operation of CARPIN Chik V and Ebola Hotline
• Participation in five health fairs.
Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies
School of Technical and Vocational Education (SOTAVE)
Phase 1 of the AutoCAD Basic Workshop for the
Industrial Technology teachers of the Papine High
School commenced on Thursday May 15, 2014 and
culminated on Thursday June 26. A total of 14 contact
hours was utilized to deliver the workshop, which was
offered over a 7-week period.
College of Business and Management (COBAM)
• In November 2014, students from all three schools
in the College as well as the Montego Bay Campus
visited the Youth With A Mission (YWAM) and
provided needed enhancements to the dormitory
facilities. The students assisted by staff, painted
sections of the dormitories and dining area.
• The School of Business Administration donated
household items and provided grooming assistance
for residents of Golden Age Home, Vineyard Town on
Sunday, 12th April 2014.
• The Accounting Seminar group conducted a
community outreach to the SOS Children’s Village in
Stony Hill on March 29, 2015. Members of faculty
and students participated in painting the perimeter
wall on the playing field, conducting art and craft
classes provided career counselling and treated the
children to lunch.
• The Finance and Banking Seminar group along with
their facilitators completed a community service
project at the Jamaica National Children’s Home on
March 7, 2015.
• The Events Marketing students (Papine Campus)
hosted a luncheon under the theme Autism is a World:
Reach, Connect, Empower. A financial donation was
given to the association of parents of children with
autism. Additionally the Events Marketing students
(Western Campus) hosted a cocktail party in support
of autism awareness.
