DIVISION OF COMMUNITY SERVICE AND
DEVELOPMENT
The Division of Community Service and Development
has the critical role of facilitating service learning and
community development and service. The division also
collaborates with key community partners, providing
institutional support to community initiatives and
undertaking innovative community initiatives with
national and international impact.
In addition, the division serves the University over
10,000 undergraduates, who during their first year, are
provided with service opportunities to complement
their academic experience. The department is the
“voice” of the university in the community which
includes the non-Papine campus locations in Kingston,
Montego Bay and the CSP1001 programme in the
Community Colleges who conduct university franchise
programmes.
“UTECH CARES” Project
The division continued to implement the UTech,
Jamaica Cares Project, which had commenced in
September 2013, with grant funding from the USAID.
This project was implemented as a follow up to an
EU-supported initiative aimed at expanding the limits
of tolerance and respect at
UTech, Jamaica following an incidence of mob violence.
With three major components, of i) improving attitudes;
ii) integrating core values; and iii) building awareness,
the major objectives were to raise visibility of issues
related to respect, tolerance and diversity, as well as to
strengthen the role of the protection of human rights
in society. The main outputs of the project were as
follows:
• Song on Respect and Tolerance - written by Mr
Coswell Duncan (UTech, Jamaica Music Tutor) and
Mr Grub Cooper ( Musician)
• Bookmarker Project – bookmakers designed with
a message inspired by the theme “Respect and
Tolerance for Diversity”
• Seminars on Stigma and Discrimination
• Publication of twenty (20) student articles
• Public Service Announcement (PSA) video -
developed for Human Rights Day
• Erection of sculpture and mural
• UTech, Jamaica Cares Survey
• Essence of Humanities (Ubuntu) Award June 2014:
This humanitarian award honoured twenty-one
unsung heroes from across the island, who, through
their work have brought out the best in others around
them.
