The College received a Certificate of recognition from
the Dental Council of Jamaica in recognition of the
Dental Courses of study that are being offered at the
institution.
The American Board of Dental Examinations and
the North Eastern Regional Board of the American
Board of Dental Examinations and the North Eastern
Regional Board of Dental Examiners visited the
College and conducted an onsite assessment. Mock
examinations were held at the College in November
2014. Based on the performance of the students
during the examinations, the North East Regional
Dental Examination Board on January 9, 2015 voted
to establish Jamaica as the first country outside the
United States of America to be a full member of the
American Dental Examination Body (ADEX) and the
Commission on Dental Competency Assessments
(CDCA) formerly, North East Regional Examination
Board (USA) of Dental Examiners (NERB).
Infrastructural Development
A Dental Prosthetic Laboratory, the first of its kind
established at any oral health training facility in Jamaica
has been set up with the support of Great Shape! Inc. -
the world’s largest non-profit international humanitarian
dental programme. The fully operational Lab has been
set up with state-of-the art equipment comparable to
the best of such facilities in the world. The lab is valued
at over $12M, and of equal or greater significance is its
value as a training facility where the Dental Laboratory
Technician (DLT) students will see and have a hands-on
appreciation of the process of preparing dentures for
real patients.
Local and International Linkages and Collaborations
International Student Exchange:
The exchange programme where students from
different countries attended special training in outreach
and clinical dentistry continued during this review
period. The College received students from Germany,
UK, China, Russia, Poland, Khazakstan.
Partnership continued with the Universities of Maryland
and Arizona for educational programme and lecturer
support. Students of the College have distinguished
themselves in hosting the International Volunteer
Programme of the International Dental Student body
(IDS).
Visiting Professors
The College continued to benefit from the voluntary
service of distinguished overseas dental professionals
during the year in review. Among them, from Canada
Professor Gary Glassman and Professor Leendert
Boksman. Professor Boksman assisted in the
preparation for Commission on Dental Competency
Assessments (CDCA) formerly, North East Regional
Examination Board (USA) of Dental Examiners (NERB)/
the American Dental
Examination Body (ADEX)
