The proposal to establish the Joint Colleges of
Medicine, Oral Health and Veterinary Sciences was
approved by the University Council in December 2011.
During the current review period the operational units
were The College of Oral Health Sciences and the
School of Public Health and Health Technology which is
a part of the College of Medicine. The School, located
at 21 Slipe Pen Road, Kingston 5 offers the
B.Sc.
programmes in Environmental Health, Public Health
Nursing and Occupational Health and Safety as well as
a Master of Public Health.
The College of Oral Health Sciences offers BSc.
Programmes in Dental Laboratory Technology, Dental
Nursing Therapy and Dental Hygiene; Diploma in Dental
Assisting (Expanded Function) and Doctor of Medical
Dentistry (DMD)
The College is a significant contributor to oral health
knowledge and practice in Jamaica through the
training of individuals for the dental workforce as well
as through its commitment to, and extensive practice
of voluntary, pro bono community dental service.
Students are exposed to the application of theoretical
and practical approaches to dentistry which provides
them with a broader perspective of their role as dental
health professionals in a developing country.
The College has established and maintains:
The Rosalie Warpeha–Caribbean Institute for
Strategic Planning and Research in Oral Health,
The Oral Health Centre of Excellence for the provision
of comprehensive and special needs oral health care
and,
A Bio-molecular Research laboratory for conducting
research in Oral Health.
The College of Oral Health Sciences continues to
be a source of significant benevolence to many
vulnerable and at-risk Jamaicans. Services provided
include examinations and specialist consultations,
diagnostic services such as radiography and biopsies,
dental prophylaxis (cleaning), preventative oral health
procedures such as topical fluoride applications,
varnishes and sealants, fillings, root canal treatment,
oral and maxillofacial surgery, dental implants,
prostodontics services (removable full and partial
dentures, crown and bridge, orthodontics, paediatric
dental services, peridontics services, endodontic
services. These services are provided at no cost the
patients.
The College has been the recipient of significant
endowment/contributions from Individual Dental
Surgeons, Dental Supply companies and Organizations.
