Earn and Study Programme
Table 1.4 indicates that for the 2014/15 fiscal year, a
total of 354 students were employed on the Earn and
Study Programme across the three semesters. The
current cost of the programme is $29.8 Million Dollars
($29,837,334.50). This represents a 9% decrease in
students employed over the previous year and a 16%
decrease in the amount of monies spent. This general
downward trend began in 2012 and is a direct result of
the worsening economic climate being experienced by
the country and by extension, the University.
The Expanded Earn and Study Programme
The Expanded Programme was launched in August of
2010 in response to the tremendous demands being
placed on the Regular Earn and Study Programme, by
students desperate for additional sources of income; as
well as UTech’s ever-increasing manpower needs. As
such, the Expanded Programme has the three-pronged
effect of providing valuable training for students who
receive real-work experience to complement their
academic pursuits, while earning additional income
and at the same meeting some of the University’s
manpower needs.
For the current review period 122 students were
employed on the Expanded Programme at a cost
of $11,811,450.00. (This figure for the Expanded
Programme has been included in the overall programme
figure of $29.8 Million Dollars.)
Student
Welfare Programmes
For the 2014/15 fiscal year, a total of 1072 students
benefited from welfare assistance in the form of
grants, lunch subsidy, bus passes or sports meals.
This brings the total expenditure on welfare activities
to $12.9 Million Dollars ($12,919,670.10); representing
a 7.9% decrease in the total amount of monies spent
over the previous year. Of the $12.9 Million Dollars,
$7.1 Million Dollars ($7,186,670.10) was used to assist
Nine Hundred and Ninety-one (991) of the University’s
most needy students, while the remaining $5.7 Million
