The Jamaica Observer remained consistent in its
support for students in the School of Hospitality
and Tourism Management (SHTM). This year, the
Jamaica Observer awarded $1.5 Million Dollars
($1,500,000.00) in scholarships and bursaries; and for
the fourth consecutive year gave students of SHTM
the opportunity to work at the prestigious Jamaica
Observer ‘Table Talk’ Food Awards. A total of 42
students participated, and the Jamaica Observer gave
an additional $126,000.00 as stipend for the student
volunteers.
The Chinese Embassy
Scholarships valued at a total of US Eight Thousand
Dollars (US$8,000) were awarded to five outstanding
students by the Government of the People’s Republic
of China. The success of this scholarship programme
has paved the way for other collaborative initiatives
between the University and the Embassy of China.
New Era Homes 2000 Limited
New Era Homes 2000 Limited made a substantial
award to cover full tuition and books for two first year
civil engineering students who will continue to receive
the award over the four years of their course of study.
Sponsorship
In addition to funding for scholarships, the Department
of Student Financing also receives from several public
and private entities significant sponsorship to fund
tuition and other school-related expenses for students.
The list of benefactors includes both local and
international sponsors. However, unlike scholarships,
sponsorship is not tied to academic performance, but is
usually given to a student as a grant or loan.
At the close of the 2014/15 fiscal year, the total
value of sponsorship was $1.39 Billion Dollars
($1,394,136,765.93); received from 148 public and
private sector companies. This figure includes 15
international sponsors. See table 1.3 for details.
Sponsorship as an Income Source
As indicated by figure 1.4 below, the combined
income from sponsorship and scholarship represents
47% of the University’s total tuition income; with the
remaining 53% coming from self-financed students.
Also noteworthy is the fact that the Student Loans
Bureau (SLB) represents well over a third (39%) of
the University’s total tuition income, and 90% of total
sponsorship (see figure 1.3).
