(CERIAS) accredited Security Labs in the Department
of Computer Science at UNC.
The grant was awarded to Dr Sean Thorpe, Senior
Lecturer in Computer Security and Digital Forensics,
School of Computing and Information Technology
(SCIT) and Mr Kedrian James, Lecturer, SCIT, to
develop new research competencies at the graduate
level in Information Security. Mr Kedrian James
commenced his research activities at UNC on January
30, 2015.
SCIT Graduate Student wins American National
Science Foundation Travel Grant for Women in
Cyber-Security
Mrs. Delane Wallace - Robinson, first year MSc
Information Systems Management graduate student
was awarded the American National Science
Foundation (NFS) Travel Grant to attend the 2nd
National Women in Cyber-security conference held
March 27 – 28, 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The
award supports exposure for talented female graduate
student researchers in cyber-security worldwide.
UTech, Jamaica/SCIT Sapna Team Placed 2nd in
Software Development Competition at UWI
On March 6, 2015, the UTech, Jamaica Sapna Initiative,
a student professional development unit in the School of
Computing and Information Technology (SCIT), placed
second in the Developing the Caribbean hackathon.
The duration of the hackathon was 24 hours. UTech,
Jamaica/Sapna entered two teams competing against
teams from UWI, NCU and professional software
developers. Both teams developed very innovative
apps. The UTech, Jamaica/SCIT team dubbed “Sapna
Excalibur” placed 2nd in the competition and won a
prize of $50,000.They were the only University team
that placed in the competition.
FENC students shine at IEEE Southeastern
Conference 2015
The Faculty of Engineering and Computing student
team represented the University at the Annual IEEE
SoutheastCon 2015 conference in Florida, USA. They
won first place in Webpage competition and were
finalists in the Ethics and Software Competitions.
ICT Seminar
The SCIT graduate office hosted its annual ICT Seminar
at the Technology Innovation Centre on December 2,
2014 under the theme “Regulating the ICT Industry
and its Effects on Growth and Development”. The
opening address was given by Hon. Phillip Paulwell,
Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining.
Other speakers included Mr Cecil McCain, Director,
Post and Telecommunications, Ministry of Science,
Technology, Energy and Mining, Dr Andrew Wheatley,
Opposition Spokesperson on Science, ICT and Digital
Society Development, Mr Ronald Sutherland, General
Manager - FYAH 105. Ms. Ingrid Riley, Executive
Director, ConnectiMass and Mr Arnett Campbell, Head,
SCIT, UTech, Jamaica.
