Through his efforts, he played a key role in the evolution of the College of Arts, Science, and Technology (CAST) into the University of Technology, Jamaica, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire.

A life well lived, a life worth living, and a life worth emulating

Mr. David Sangster, son, Dr. The Hon. Alfred Sangster, described his father as “an incredible father and an even better role model” while delivering the eulogy at the Thanksgiving Service held in his honour on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium.

In a heartfelt tribute, Mr. David Sangster, son of the late Dr. The Hon. Alfred Sangster, described his father as “an incredible father and an even better role model.” Speaking to well-wishers during his delivery of the eulogy, David shared a deeply personal reflection on the life of his father.

David's tribute painted a picture of a man whose life exemplified integrity, service, and humility. “A life well lived, a life worth living, and a life worth emulating,” he said. David recounted how his father, a gifted educator, was always eager to help others improve. He did this with grace and humility, and not a trace of the self-righteousness that comes with unsolicited advice, he shared, adding that his father’s sharp wit and great sense of humour were also defining characteristics.

Dr. Sangster’s legacy, according to David, was built on a foundation of Christian faith and moral conviction. “Dad lived a life of integrity, compassion, humility, grace, and service. There was no profiling, no hustling, no dishonesty, no self-promotion,” David expressed, adding, he was a Christian man who walked the talk and whose moral compass never ever waivered.”

Beyond his character, David reflected on the work ethic instilled in him by his father. “Dad instinctively knew that true happiness comes from solving hard problems, from rolling up his sleeves and putting in the hard miles.”

A “Recipe for Life

As David honoured his father’s memory, he shared that “Doc,” as he was affectionately called, left behind more than just lessons he left a blueprint for life, a “recipe for life.” This recipe, which David turned into an acronym, encapsulated the core values his father lived byR for respect for yourself, others, and resiliency; E for excellence and high standards; C for courage and Christian faith; I for integrity; P for purpose and selfless service and E for empathy.

David concluded, “I am forever grateful for his unconditional love and care, and his instilling in me the high standards of excellence, integrity, and honour, and for also teaching me the value and importance of a strong Christian upbringing. That is his real legacy for his children, his grandchildren, and the thousands of people who were fortunate enough to work with him, know him, or meet him, he asserted.

A legacy of Faith, Integrity, and Service

Mr. Peter Sangster, son, Dr. The Hon. Alfred Sangster, OJ delivers a heartfelt eulogy on the life and legacy of his father, at the Thanksgiving Service held in his honour on February 22, 2025, at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium.

Also reflecting on his father’s life, Mr. Peter Sangster, focused on his father’s unwavering Christian faith, his humble yet impactful journey, and the profound message his life leaves behind. Peter shared fond memories of his time with his father and emphasized how his dad touched individual lives in a meaningful way, noting he lived his life helping one person at a time.”

Peter described his late father as a hands-on person, often helping out in the gardens at UTech, Jamaica, before joining board meetings.  He reflected, Dad’s Christian faith was his anchor in the world, and he left a legacy of integrity and high ethical standards in all his work.  I believe this comes directly from his commitment to Jesus Christ. Despite facing challenges and often lacking resources, Dr. Sangster always had a vision to create, build, or improve something. Peter recalled his father advising him, “Sometimes you can only do a little of this today and a little of this tomorrow. Be patient.”

One of those visions was the Alfred Sangster Auditorium. Although it took thirteen years to build, the auditorium now stands as a testament to Dr. Sangster’s long-term commitment and vision.

As Peter reflected on his father's life, he expressed his deep love for him, noting that while he is saddened by his passing, the overwhelming tributes that poured in after his death were a powerful reminder of the legacy he left behind. Dad's life shines,Peter said.

He concluded with a profound message: “You can pursue a life of integrity, Christian faith, with high ethical standards and a moral compass that doesn’t deviate. You can spend time genuinely helping people, and you will still command a stunning admiration of those characteristics by thousands and thousands of people. The overwhelming number of tributes at his death shows that these are still values that can be celebrated in today’s world.”
