Twenty New UTech, Jamaica Student Ambassadors Inducted

- In alignment with its student-centeredness goal to empower student leaders, the University of Technology, Jamaica recently inducted twenty (20) new Student Ambassadors at an official ceremony held at the Shared Facilities Building, UTech, Jamaica, Papine Campus.
- The University of Technology, Jamaica’s Student Ambassador Programme was launched in 2019, and is spearheaded by the Marketing Unit. Students are selected for the role based on their academic performance and their involvement in community service following which they are interviewed by the UTech, Jamaica Student Ambassador Committee led by the Marketing Unit. UTech, Jamaica Student Ambassadors are expected to serve as brand representatives, bridging communication between the university, the student body and other stakeholders. In doing so they are charged to communicate the attributes of a UTech, Jamaica education and to promote a positive public image of the institution.

- Miss Marion Brown, Vice President and Registrar, UTech Jamaica, in delivering remarks on behalf of Dr. Kevin Brown, President, described the new cohort of UTech, Jamaica Student Ambassadors as “true gems of the University of Technology, Jamaica.” The President’s message encouraged the student ambassadors to: “Use your voice to promote the transformative power of UTech Jamaica by sharing how this institution has helped you grow, learn, and lead.” The message went on to caution the students: “Your voice is powerful, and your words have influence. Be thoughtful, be proud and be intentional in how you represent your university.”
- The President’s message also lauded the Marketing Unit for their commitment to student development, noting that the UTech, Jamaica Student Ambassador Programme has become “a powerful force for good,” allowing students to sharpen their communication, teamwork, leadership and customer service skills.

- Committing to the Role

Alumnus and former UTech, Ja Student Ambassador, Mr. Kawaine Anderson, Duty Manager, Couples Resort delivers the keynote address at the induction ceremony.
- UTech, Ja Alumnus, Mr. Kawaine Anderson and former Student Ambassador, in his keynote address told the inductees that they must commit themselves to their roles and all that it entails. Anderson who is Duty Manager at Couples Resort told the students that to succeed, they must cultivate the essential leadership traits of selflessness, influence, effective time management, adaptability and consistency. “The relentless spirit of service, this is the beating heart of a student ambassador,” Anderson stated, adding that in serving others they must demonstrate “empathy and selflessness, and not selfishness.”
- Noting that the role comes with added responsibility to their already rigorous academic tasks, Anderson told the student leaders, “In this role you will learn how to manage priorities, how to plan ahead, how to balance competing responsibilities and how to say no when necessary.” He also cautioned the new ambassadors against accepting the title if they are not willing to show up for the role. “If it matters to you, make the time,” Anderson stated.
- Ready to serve

- Responding on behalf of the newly inducted UTech, Jamaica Student Ambassadors, Renee Latoni Peters from the Faculty of Science and Sport expressed profound joy to be given the opportunity to serve the institution. “To be named a student ambassador is a “profound responsibility” and “a call to lead by example in upholding the core values of [Respect, Accountability Integrity, Service, Excellence, Innovation and Team Spirit] that define our institution,” said Peters.
- She added that as newly inducted student leaders they will remain committed to demonstrating “Respect for the unique experiences and identities of other, Accountability for our actions our words and the legacy we leave behind, Integrity in all that we do, Service which transforms leadership into something greater than ourselves, Excellence in academics, service and personal growth, Innovation that pushes boundaries and redefines what is possible and Team spirit that brings us together across faculties and backgrounds.”
