STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS
World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC)
The University of Technology, Jamaica has moved
up 21 places in the ranking of the World Universities
Debating Championship (WUDC) earning a spot
among the top thirteen percent of debating institutions
in the world. The feat was achieved following the
team’s performance at the World University Debating
Championship (WUDC), held from December 27, 2014,
to January 4, 2015 at the University of Technology,
Mara, Malaysia at which the debating team also
retained regional dominance in British Parliamentary
debating at the university level. UTech, Ja. is now
ranked 61 among 511 Universities worldwide ahead
of universities such as University of the West Indies
(96), New York University (114), University of Western
Sydney, Australia (176), Tokyo Institute of Technology,
Japan (218) and University of Kent, UK (239).
The teams were accompanied by
University Registrar, Dr Elaine Wallace,
who adjudicated in several rounds of
the competition and Dr Rohan Lewis,
Dean, Faculty of Education and Liberal
Studies and co-advisor to the UTech
Debating and Public Speaking Society
(UDPSS). The teams were prepared
by Advisors: Mrs. Mercedes Deane,
Deputy Registrar, and Mrs. Garcia Green-
McLennon, Director, Student Financing
and team coach Mr Germaine Barrett,
a six-time international debater for the
University.

Most Hon. Edward Seaga, (right) Chancellor, confers the Honorary
Doctor of Science on renowned researcher, Prof. Michael Nobel, at
a special ceremony held on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at the Alfred
Sangster auditorium, UTech Papine campus. Prof. Nobel who is a
world renowned researcher in medicine, social sciences and advanced
medical technologies, was awarded the Hon. DSc “in recognition of
the international respect that his scholarship and service in science
has attained, particularly in the field of medicine.” His conferment was
followed by a special lecture on “The Future of Medical Technology
and the Role Jamaica Can Play.”
