HISTORY The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech, Ja.) dates its beginning from 1958, originally as the Jamaica Institute of Technology. In 1959 the name of the institution was changed to the College of Arts, Science and Technology and it became incorporated in the College of Arts, Science and Technology (CAST) Scheme of 1959. This was validated by an ACT of Parliament in 1964. In 1986, the CAST Scheme was revised in order to make the College a degree-granting institution, and the College became legally empowered to conduct affairs under a governing Council and Academic Board. The institution was formally accorded University status on September 1, 1995 as the University of Technology, Jamaica. The history of the institution is intimately connected with the social and economic development of Jamaica. From just over 50 students and four programmes in 1958, UTech Ja. has grown to become Jamaica’s premier national institution with a student population of over 12,000. It now offers more than 100 programmes at the certificate, diploma and degree levels through its three colleges and five faculties. The University has further expanded access to its programme offerings to meet the demands of business and industry by establishing campuses and satellite locations across Jamaica. In addition, several programmes are franchised through partnership with community colleges, and most programmes are associated with national and 5 Introduction to the University international professional umbrella organisations. Syllabuses are modeled on the English polytechnic system, with emphasis on flexibility of approach, work-based, experiential learning and professional linkages facilitated through co-operative work based programmes. Flexibility in the University’s academic programmes is reflected in the various modes of course delivery, which include the establishment of a Semesterised mode of delivery introduced in academic year 1999/2000 and further adjusted and piloted in 2009–2010. The University’s mandate is reflected in its mission – “To positively impact Jamaica and the wider Caribbean through high quality learning opportunities, research and value added solutions to government, industry and communities. “As such, the University’s three core pillars are teaching, research and community service. The University Council of Jamaica (UCJ) has registered UTech, Ja. as a tertiary institution. The University was granted Institutional Accreditation effective February 2018. When institutional accreditation is granted, the programmes are recognized by the UCJ and local and international stakeholders, as meeting minimum acceptable standards. The University is committed to excellence in all aspects of its course of study offerings. By submitting its courses of study to accrediting bodies for review and accreditation, the University ensures that its programmes are of high quality and international standard.

“Azure a Bar wavy enhanced of one wave and depressed of one point Argent issuing therefrom a Sun in Splendour with four rays reversed throughout or in base with the head surmounting the Bar a Pair of Compass Dividers also or and for the Crest upon a Helm A Rim set with Pineapples three manifest or issuing therefrom between two trailing Branches of Lignum vitae flowered proper each terminating in a Seed or three Hibiscus Flowers also or slipped and leaved Azure hovering over and abutting that on the sinister a Long-Tail Doctor Bird proper.” In creating the Arms, the University sought to reflect its values and focus while maintaining a link with the former Institution – the College of Arts, Science & Technology (CAST). The components, which are generally stylised, are interpreted below. The Doctor Bird and Pineapples, which are part of the Jamaican Coat of Arms, portray the uniqueness of the Institution as the first national university. The Hibiscus on which the Doctor Bird feeds, symbolizes the University as the sustainer of mind, body and spirit. The Lignum vitae, a native Jamaican tree, is abundant on the Liguanea Plains, where the University is located, and symbolizes productivity and the capacity to withstand adversity. The Sun symbolizes life, light and energy; the Mountains – strength, majesty and beauty; the Open Book, on its side, following the contour of the mountains – the generation, accessibility and transfer of knowledge and the Pair of Dividers, which was also a component of the CAST logo – technology and the continuity between CAST and UTech, Jamaica. The Motto, in Latin, is “Magna per Artem Gesta” and translated into English is “Excellence Through Knowledge.” 6 The Arms (Registered with the College of Arms of London and granted to the University of Technology, Jamaica in November 1999)

THE MACE OF KNOWLEDGE symbolizes the power of knowledge as the path to progress and a weapon against ignorance. The Mace is made of silver symbolizing light and Lignum vitae wood symbolizing our heritage. The five polished silver fingers or petals that form the crown, cradle the inner sphere (Lignum vitae), the sphere of knowledge of the University. They are of equal strength and significance and represent the use of the five senses, which contribute to the expansion of universal knowledge, represented by the larger silver sphere. The openness of this sphere signifies the infinite nature of knowledge. The crown, which is supported by a wooden staff, made of Lignum vitae wood is mounted on three discs, representing mind, soul and body and the levels of education – basic, primary, secondary and tertiary, in Jamaica. Silver bands in the middle and at both ends encircle the staff. The Lignum vitae flower, which forms part of the Arms, is engraved on the middle band. The Mace was designed by Basil Watson and constructed by him in collaboration with Garth Sanguinetti. 7 The Mace
