University of Technology, Jamaica “Pioneering Past; Bright Future ” ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018 32 total of 12 staff were in attendance and included Academic Advisors, and College and Faculty Student Affairs staff. The theme of the session was “The Role of the Counselling Unit in Student Advising”. University Senior Counsellor, Mr Craig McNally sought the feedback of staff on the roll out of a draft symptom card called Ask Ref ( See appendix 3 below ) . Once diseminated, Ask Ref will provide a list of symptoms which can help staff better identify cases for referral to the Unit. The first session also included the discussion of case vignettes, which were presented by University Counsellor, Mrs Marlene Pottinger-Gyles. The vignettes provided an overview of how various presentations are managed, and included a discussion on the role of inter-professionalism in managing the cases. Career and Placement Services Student Work & Travel The Career and Placement Unit registered 14 summer work and travel agencies for the period. This figure has remained unchanged when compared to the previous reporting period. The registered agencies are as follows The Career and Placement Officer, through a new initiative, visited sites overseas for students who were on the work and travel programme during June 19 – 23, 2017. This visit was sponsored by Joyst and Continental Pools along with monetary donations from SWAT, IWTS, IRSS and Max J. The sites visited were the facilities of four (4) Florida recruiters and housing and five (5) Maryland recruiters and housing. Upon these site visits, the students were considerably comfortable but room for improvement was noted. Recruitment of UTech, Ja. Graduates Alpart Placement The Career and Placement Unit was successful in placing 52 students from the School of Engineering into the Alpart recruitment programme. The recruited students were given the opportunity to train for one year in China. After their training, they will be offered permanent placement at the Alpart plant in Jamaica. Teaching English in China University of Technology, Jamaica students with a Bachelor’s degree were requested in October, 2017 to work in Shenzhen, China to teach English Language to children in schools at ages 4-16 years old by recruiting agent, Mr. Richard Yang, Human Resource Manager for Cali-English. The Career and Placement Unit was successful in assisting seven (7) students with confirmed employment opportunities for February 2018.
