University of Technology, Jamaica “Pioneering Past; Bright Future ” ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018 24 The Opening Session of the Retreat which was addressed by Mr Richard Powell, Pro-Chancellor, Professor Stephen Vasciannie, President and Chairman of the Academic Board, Dr Elaine Wallace, University Registrar and Mrs Charmagne Mortley, Assistant Registrar University Secretariat. Tenure of Council and Academic Board Members Dr. Rickert Allen who was appointed as Co-opted Member of the Council attended his first meeting in June 2017. He was subsequently selected by the Pro-Chancellor to be his Nominee to the Governance Committee where he assumed the role as Chairman. He replaced Major General Rocky Meade who had resigned on his appointment as Head of the Jamaica Defence Force. Mr. Granville Knight, and Miss Kimone Roper, incoming Students’ Union President and 1st Vice President Academic Affairs took up seats on the Council and the Academic Board respectively. The Academic Board filled the vacancies for three Professors for the first time since the establishment of the University. Professors Vernon Buchanan, Fitzroy Henry and Winston Davidson, who were the only available Professors who could serve in that capacity, accepted the invitation. Dr. Nadine Maitland, Academic Staff Representative of the Faculty of Engineering and Computing was victorious at the election conducted by the University Secretariat on December 15, 2017. She filled the casual vacancy created on the Academic Board by Pro Chancellor, Mr Richard Powell speaking at the Academic Board Retreat held March 2018.
