Throughout the 9 preliminary rounds of the competition, the UTech Ja team faced off with teams such as Stanford, Oxford, University of Indonesia, Cape Town University, London School of Economics, University of California, performing creditably against even the toughest opponents from top-ranked Universities. UTech Jamaica’s A-Team won 1 match and placed 2nd in three other matches; while the B-Team also won one match and placed second in four other matches. While UTech Ja. did not successfully break through to the Quarter Finals, the team certainly performed well enough to position UTech Ja with the highest speaker ranking in the Caribbean. UTech Ja. speaker Charles Frost tops the table with highest speaker points in the Caribbean at 683 points followed by teammate Rochelle Pinnock who is ranked in 3rd position at 671 points. University Secretariat The University Secretariat continued to provide support for the work of the University Council, Academic Board and committees of the Council, in keeping with its remit of providing support to the University Registrar who is the Secretary to the Council and the Academic Board. Advice was also provided to the University on matters relating to policy and governance. Whereas an important part of its output was the support provided for the Institutional Accreditation process, focus was also given to facilitate the new and on-going projects. These addressed the increased integration of technology in some aspects of the operations of the unit to enhance operational effectiveness and efficiency. Committee Support The work of several standing and Ad Hoc committees of the University Council and Academic Board were supported by the University Secretariat. These addressed Governance, Remuneration, Human Resources, University Appointments and Promotions, Honorary Degrees and Other Awards, as well as other areas related to the work of the Council such as the President’s Targets. The University Secretariat facilitated 37 meetings of these bodies during the period. Annual General Meeting of the University Council The Annual General Meeting of the University Council was held on February 28, 2018 at which the University’s Annual Reports for 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 were presented. The Independent Auditor’s Reports addressed the financial accounts for the financial years April 1, 2015 to March 31 2016 and April 1, 2016 to March 31, 2017. The meeting noted that the University is now up to date with its financial reporting to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information and it is anticipated that it will resume its normal reporting schedule for the financial year 2017/2018.
