University of Technology, Jamaica ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017 Page 24 Excellence Through Knowledge Retreat of the Academic Board The Board met at a Retreat on March 27, 2016 where consideration was given to its performance for the period 2012 – 2016. Proposals were generated from the deliberations aimed at strengthening the Quality Management System of the University and repositioning of the Academic Board to more effectively monitor the academic business processes in order to achieve the desired outcomes for the University. Governance Some Governance instruments were reviewed or newly developed and subsequently approved by the Council on the recommendation of the Governance Committee during the fiscal year to address gaps and to improve the corporate governance framework of the institution. Administrative Policies Fit and Proper Procedures a new governance instrument was developed and revisions to the Study Leave and Financial Assistance Policy for Upgrade of Qualifications were approved. The Council approved the proposal for the Establishment of the Caribbean Case Researchers as an ‘Other Body’ on March 20, 2017. STUDENT SERVICES DEPARTMENT Student Leadership Conference The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech, Ja) through the Student Services Department, hosted its 18th Annual Student Leaders’ Conference under the theme “Leading by Example…Raising the bar” on May 9 and 10 at the UTech, Papine Campus and from May 11 to 13, 2016 at the Moorlands Camp site in Manchester. Eighty-seven (87) students from the Student Union Council, Clubs and Societies and Halls of Residence Executives attended the conference. Chancellor, Most Hon. Edward Seaga, ON, PC presents Honorary degrees to Ambassador Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, OD and to the Hon. Dr. Glen Christian, OJ, JP at the Graduation ceremony held November 2016 at the National Arena.
