University of Technology, Jamaica ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017 Page 23 Excellence Through Knowledge Deputy Chair on July 18, 2016. y y Prime Minister’s Nominee - Mr Aldrick McNab was appointed as the Prime Minister’s Nominee of the Council. He replaced Dr Warren Blake. y y Co-opted member, Brigadier Rocky Meade, resigned as Co-opted member with effect on December 2016 as a result of his appointment as Major General of the Jamaica Defence Force. y y Chancellor’s Nominee - Ms Scarlett Gillings was appointed to serve as the Chancellor’s Nominee; she replaced the Most Honourable Errald Miller. Annual General Meeting of Council The Annual General Meeting of the Council which addressed the Annual Report for the financial year ending March 31, 2015 was held on January 23, 2016 at the Joan Duncan School of Entrepreneurship, Ethics and Leadership Conference Room located on the University’s Papine Campus. Audited Financial Statements The Audited Financial Statements for the Year ending March 31, 2015 were approved at a meeting of Council on July 18, 2016. The meeting also authorised the Pro-Chancellor, Mr Richard Powell and the Acting President, Professor Colin Gyles, to affix their respective signatures to the document for inclusion in the Annual Report. The University had sought and received the approval from Minister of Education for the late submission of the audited financial statements. The reports were submitted to the Minister in April 2017. Approval of Expenditure Approval was granted at the meeting held March 28, 2017 for items in excess of a value of $10million in keeping with the provisions of the procurement policy. y y Provision of Security Guard Services – two year contract to be provided by King Alarm Security in the sum of $176,707,782. Honorary Degrees The Council approved the recommendations from the Joint Committee for the Award of Honorary Degrees and other Awards as follows: • Honorary Degrees The Council on September 19, 2016 and the Academic Board on September 16, 2016 endorsed the recommendations for the following persons to receive Honourable Degrees for 2016: y y Ambassador The Hon Usain Bolt, OJ, y y Ambassador Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, OD y y The Hon Dr. Glen Christian, OJ, JP Mr Bolt was not available to attend the Graduation Ceremony and it was agreed that the conferment of the Honorary Degree to him would take place in 2016.
