The main vehicles for service are the Community Service Programme 1001(CSP1010) and research and development projects undertaken by University Units which are coordinated through the Community Service Secretariat. The Community Service Programme 1001(CSP 1010) is a one (1) credit mandatory course which requires all first year students at the University to complete 40 hours of voluntary service. Various research and development projects are undertaken by the University to foster social change for community building, empowerment and sustainable development. These initiatives include the provision of skills training for caregivers and at the UTech/Mustard Seed Centre and the “Saturday University” programme which offers English Language and Mathematics at the GSAT and CXC levels as well as Entrepreneurial Training and the “Teach the Youth” summer programme led by the Students’ Union for young persons from the surrounding communities in Papine, St. Andrew. The FiWi Jamaica Project On May 21, 2015, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) signed a Cooperative Agreement to provide grant funding to the University of Technology, Jamaica to execute a Project titled “Fi Wi Jamaica.” The 3-year project which came to an end on May 20, 2018 was successfully executed as a “national social intervention Project to expand a window of opportunity for the protection and promotion of human rights of targeted socially excluded and vulnerable members of the Jamaican population.” The project provided useful insights on the many challenges as well as opportunities facing Jamaica today.Activities included evidence based dialogue, programming and policy outcome; access to social services for personal well-being & growth; engaging popular culture to create a space for change and transformation; proactive response to trafficking in persons (TIP), Combating domestic violence and intimate partner violence; effective partnerships to promote women/girls empowerment and building public demand for change.
