UTech, Jamaica athletes have dominated the international stage with world-class performances at every international event since the inception of the sport programme more than 50 years ago. With more Olympians than any other university anywhere, UTech boasts the record of being the most successful university in track and field in the world. The tradition of sporting excellence began in the early days of CAST. Then Principal, Dr. the Hon. Alfred Sangster, OJ, promoted competitive sports and Mr. Dennis Johnson, CD, then Director of Sport led with a passionate belief that with hard work and application one can achieve the seemingly impossible. Johnson believed that athletes could be trained right here in Jamaica to ‘beat the world’. That tradition has continued under the leadership of Mr. Anthony Davis who is also a former Olympian. Since 1988, the department has given evidence of its ability to train athletes in Jamaica to world class standards. The UTech programme has nurtured an impressive list of sportsmen and women. Among them, Olympians Asafa Powell, Sherone Simpson, Shelly-Ann Fraser- Pryce, Kaliese Spencer, and a host of others. The university has also enjoyed outstanding achievements in other sports including hockey, cricket, table tennis, football, netball and volley-ball. The Department of Sport is closely affiliated with the MVP (Maximum Velocity and Power) Track and Field Club comprising both UTech- student athletes and UTech-trained internationally acclaimed athletes.
