The services offered by The Department of Student Financing fall in 3 main categories: Scholarships & Bursaries, Earn & Study, and Grants.

Scholarships and Bursaries

Scholarships are awards, based on academic merit and other special criteria, that do not have to be repaid. Scholarships and Bursaries are awarded annually mainly to full-time Jamaican nationals studying at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels. However, there are specific scholarships which are also available to Caribbean nationals.

The application period for scholarships opens around the 1st week of May each year and the closing dates are as follows (unless otherwise stated):

- Scholarships offered to (returning) students in years 2-4 – June 30

- Scholarships offered to (new) students in year 1 – July 31


A sponsorship is a commitment from an entity to pay all or a portion of a student’s fees at a specified period, by way of a formal letter of undertaking to the University. All Commitments are assessed by the Debt Management Unit before approval is given. Presently, the department works with several public and private sector entities that provide various levels of sponsorship to tertiary students, to assist with the payment of tuition fees. These entities include:

  • The Students Loan Bureau
  • The Jamaica Values and Attitudes (JAMVAT) Programme
  • The National Youth Service
  • The Citizens Security and Justice Programme (CSJP)
  • The Social Development Commission (SDC)
  • The Ministry of Finance
  • The Ministry of Education
  • The Ministry of National Security
  • All Commercial Banks
  • All Credit Unions

Earn and Study (Campus Employment)

Employment is provided for students on campus through the Earn and Study Programme. Work is scheduled to avoid conflict with the students’ academic performance/schedule. Students who would like to participate in the Earn and Study Programme may choose ONE of the following options:

  • Semesters I & II - working up to twenty-four hours per fortnight


  • Summer Semester - working a forty-hour week.

    The application period for Earn and Study is as follows:
    Semesters I & II - August – September
    Summer Semester - April 1 – April 14

Welfare Grants

Financial Aid Grants are awards for students with the greatest financial need; they do not have to be repaid.

A limited number of grants are given to students who are experiencing severe economic hardships. Grants are normally given to full-time students. However, in very exceptional circumstances part time students may also benefit. Applicants must demonstrate need, which should be substantiated by a letter from a Minister of Religion, Justice of the Peace or University Counselor or Lecturer.

Grants are given for a number of different financial needs including:

  • Tuition
  • Text books
  • Travelling Expenses
  • Rent/Boarding
  • Medical Expenses

Lunch Subsidy

This grant is given to students who are not able to purchase lunch on a daily basis; we offer a subsidized lunch voucher so that students will have a meal each day while at school.

Bus Pass

This grant is given to students who are unable to cover the cost of transportation to and from school. Only students travelling via JUTC bus service can benefit from this programme.

Fee Payment

The University has provided a number of fee payment options and services that are both strategic and convenient to serve our growing student population: These service options include:

    • Payment at the Papine Campus - through the Cashiering Unit using debit card, credit card and Manager’s Cheque ONLY
    • Island-wide Payment Locations – using National Commercial Bank (NCB), Bill Express and Paymaster.
    • Payments by E-Banking & Tele-Midas – available through NCB via:
        • The e-banking facility at (NCB customers only);

      • Tele-midas 1 888 NCB FIRST (1 888 622 3477)
    • Paying Fees from Overseas – available through NCB Matilda’s Corner in Kingston:
  • Online Payment via UTech’s Website - via the “Online Services” section using Keycard, Visa or MasterCard


Students who have overpaid on their account may apply for a refund by downloading the refund application form from the University’s website and submitting it to the customer service desk located on the ground floor of the main Administration Building. Refunds are normally processed within 15 working days after the request is submitted provided that all the requisite information is provide and the student is actually eligible for a refund.


Students may request Fee Estimates and Statements of Account from the Customer Service Unit. Requests are received at the Customer Service desk located on the ground floor of the main Administration Building.

Requests are normally processed within 5-7 days after receipt of request. The service is provided at minimal service fee.

Accounting Queries

Students may visit the Customer Service Unit of the Department of Student Financing at any time to make a query on their account or to receive updates on issues pertaining to fee payment, sponsorship, refunds etc.
