The launch of the Caribbean Sculpture Park is a proud occasion for
the University of Technology, Jamaica. Its creation was one woman’s
dream, a dream pursued with such passion and conviction that it swept
all before it with the force of a cyclone. Today the dream has been
transformed into reality for all to see, to touch, to admire.
The reality before us, in metal and stone, is the concretization of
one of the fundamental concepts that will guide this University in the
coming years, certainly under my leadership. And it is that technology
does not, should not exist for its own sake. My strong conviction is
that technology alone will not deliver the development we seek, but
that technological advance must be tempered by context and culture.
The marriage of technology, context and culture is admirably
demonstrated here, and these sculptures will be monuments to
technology put to the use of art, shaped by the context of this
institution and this space, and reflecting the culture of the diverse
peoples of the Caribbean.
The Sculpture Park, conceived and implemented by our Cultural
Director, Pat Ramsay, presents to the University community and to all
our visitors present and future, a vision o technology in the service
of the humanities, and of art uplifting technology. The artists have
succeeded in presenting out of their creative imagination an image to
tease the imagination of the viewers and teach something about the
creative process.
The establishment of the Sculpture Park allows us to close the era
of the 1900’s with a sense of fulfillment and step into the year 2000
with the confidence of accomplishment, and the conviction that dreams
can come true.
I thank all our partners in this venture. As can be gathered from
the acknowledgements listed in this catalogue, this venture has
excited the imagination of just about everyone who has been invited to
share in this dream. To our international and regional partners, the
UTech family, our corporate sponsors, professionals and contractors…
thanks for sharing in a dream.
